Why You Should Date a Woman Who Loves the Barbell

2015-03-03-1425409895-352356-barbellbitch22009.jpg

Because we’re real.

Because our thumbs hurt from hookgripping deadlifts, and our voices are all sexy from yelling for somebody trying to pull 250 pounds from the floor when it’s just not moving. We don’t care. We yell anyhow, like our volume can lift pounds.

Because our posterior chains are amazing. We work like mofos to build bodacious booties and we’re not afraid to talk about them. We look great heading into a room and even better leaving one. You will stare and we’re okay with that. Unless you’re a creep, and then we’re going to get right in your grill.

Because we spit when we run. And not dribbles. We can nail that stop-sign if we need to.

We know how to hug. Long, well, and hard enough that your soul feels refilled and you know that you can go on simply because another human being really gives a damn about you.

We know how to listen. We’ve heard it all, but still your story is new. We’ve never heard it quite that way. And we know the right words that will help.

We get the pain. We’ve lived the pain. We don’t expect it to go away, ever. And we know how to deal with it. We prescribe power cleans for broken hearts.

We know to rub chalk on our calluses, but not all over our hands. We never clap and make a big cloud like they do in videos. That’s just stupid.

We wear yoga pants, but hardly ever to yoga. We wear them to front squat, back squat, snatch, deadlift, clean and jerk, and pretty much everything else, including going to work, school meetings, doctor’s appointments, and almost everywhere but weddings and funerals. And we don’t give a damn if anybody says we shouldn’t. Dress yourself. We’ll dress us.

Because we have attitude, and we own it. There are no apologies to be given for speaking our minds, speaking our hearts, or standing up for what we believe in.

And we believe in more weight on the bar, more depth to your squat, less ice in your whiskey, and more love in your heart.

And we’re not afraid to throw our clothes on the floor and stride off to the bedroom in full house lights just to get your attention. We’re not ashamed of our bodies, we are only ashamed of this world for trying to put fear and self-loathing on us.

So if you can get your act together, you should date a woman who loves the barbell. Because it’s not too late to really start living.

Feeling Up and Down, and usually bad after NOT exercising

So, I’m 5’8″, 40 years old. I started at nearly 270lbs, now down to 238. I started with a diet the week of Christmas (seriously) and started exercising at the same time. I’m doing the Couch25K thing and I’m eating a lot of fruits, veggies, low protein, and almost completely avoiding carbs, and almost no added sugar at all.

Here’s the thing… when I exercise, I feel great. I feel great afterwards. I really had no idea I’d feel as well as I do given age and weight. I feel great the next day. Then by about day 3, I start to come undone. By day 4, I come completely a mess. On the day after exercise, after I eat, I feel great. But by day 4, I feel like my blood pressure surges when I eat, and my sugar levels seem to be up and down. I’m a mess. And I only feel better when I then exercise. It’s nice motivation, but I’m kinda sick of the ups and downs and the pressure it puts me under. My BP is like 120/80 on day after exercise. By day 4, it’s about 140/90.

Yes, I told my doctor. They did a complete series of blood tests, including glucose and a complete metabolic panel, and everything is normal. And like I said, what ever is “wrong” with me, running for 20 minutes seems to fix me for 48 hours. She knows all of this and once those blood tests came in fine, that was the end of things.

What’s going on? This is kinda getting to me and is sort of roller coaster. I used to drink maybe 12 beers/week, would eat pizza for dinner and lunch. Just an awful diet, soda, lots of sugar the whole nine yards. Although all my metabolic levels tested fine, is there some sort of adjustment I’m going through? This is exhausting.

I see my doctor again in 2 months to discuss how thing are going with exercise and diet. But in the meantime, what do I do? Please tell me my system will adjust and this will end at some point.

How Vince Young Found New Purpose After His NFL Dreams Crumbled (VIDEO)

At just 31 years old, Vince Young is officially retired from the NFL — not where the young superstar quarterback thought he would be at this stage in his career. Though he had a promising start with a winning college record, Young’s pro football dreams didn’t pan out.

Losing his identity as an athlete hit him hard, as he explains to filmmaker Jonas Elrod on the OWN series “In Deep Shift with Jonas Elrod.”

Today, Young has dug himself out of the depression and financial ruin that plagued him after leaving pro sports. He says he has a new purpose in life. In the above video, Vince volunteers at Austin Sunshine Camp, where he mentors kids and helps provide them with the tools they need to face challenges they come across in their daily lives.

“My purpose is just kids, our next generation,” Vince says. “Making sure they can live their dream, the dream that I’m living. And that’s the key of pushing that message.”

The kids are clearly happy to have him. “Vince Young!” one yells. “Come ride in a canoe with us!”

“Like our role model,” a young boy says.

As a kid who grew up in a low-income community of Houston without a father-figure in his life, Young hopes he can now be the mentor that he always wanted as a child.

“To get kids to know that it’s more than what you see in your every day life,” Young says. “You can experience this whole world as long as you take advantage of the opportunities that’s being given and what’s being taught to you.”

Working with kids is helping him heal past wounds, Young explains. Though his father was incarcerated and missed most of his childhood, Young has moved past it. “I definitely forgave my father,” he says. “We see each other, we talk. Relax with the family. I’m happy to see my son around with his grandpa, so I thank God for that and for finding that inner peace that I needed.”

With a newfound purpose in life, Young says he’s made a complete turnaround from where he was after his NFL career fizzled out. “I tripped, scarred my knees up — but now I’m patching up the bruises, got a little ice pack on my neck — and I’m moving forward,” he says.

In the video below from HuffPost Live, Young talks more about how he was able to turn his failure into success.
